The Right to Have Rights: Citizenship, Racism and Belonging

2026-09-28

Citizenship shapes far more than the passport someone carries. It can determine political participation, security of residence, and access to rights.

On May 8, 2024, the Geschichten in Bewegung series in Wuppertal opened with a screening of the short film The Right to Have Rights, followed by a public conversation with Miman Jasarovski, Phyllis Quartey and Kenan Emini, moderated by Meieli Borowsky-Islam.

The discussion moves between personal experience and broader structures: barriers surrounding naturalization and residence status, experiences of Roma communities, racism and colonial histories, and the ways communities organize when rights and participation are denied.

It also asks what becomes possible when different communities recognize shared experiences of exclusion while building solidarity across those differences.
